During the past several years, much has been written about platelet–rich plasma (platelet injections) and its effectiveness in treating injuries.

Many famous athletes—including Tiger Woods and tennis star Rafael Nadal—have received platelet injections for various problems, such sprained knees and chronic tendon injuries. Some have claimed it helped them to return to competition more quickly. According to current research studies, platelet injections is most effective in the treatment of chronic tendon injuries, especially tennis elbow. In this second in a three-part series, Dr. Matthew McAuliffe, a fellowship-trained physiatrist at the Center for Spine and Orthopedics, will explain what platelet injections is, how it works and what conditions it is most effective in treating.
